Friends of Emmet – Coming Apart

By

There is a blog post on Friends of Emmet’s (FoE) MySpace that says they will be featured on the upcoming Warped Tour 2010 Compilation, the album I am sure many of you are familiar with that’s released each year before Warped Tour begins.

That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t make much sense to me, as – from one can tell once the first 40 seconds of ‘Coming Apart’ have passed – FoE doesn’t really fit that bill at all. And I don’t mean in the Suicide Silence/Whitechapel not-fitting sense.

FoE’s Myspace bio says the following:

Friends of Emmet, (F.O.E), are a band from Dublin Ireland. Formed in late 2008 they are now based in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

F.O.E. have just finished recording their debut album “Coming Apart” due for release on April 23rd 2010. The album was produced by Rick Boston & Engineered by Robin Holden. It will consist of ten tracks one of which is a remake of the David Bowie song “Young Americans”.

In May the band will be filming a video for “Coming Apart” (the title track) in both Los Angeles & San Francisco. This song was written about John Kevin Hines (youtube his story). Kevin is a man who F.O.E. admire very much. Kevin will also appear in the video.

The band have also collaborated with Daniel Ash from Bauhaus & Love & Rockets to do a remix of Young Americans. The idea of working together came about while both artists were recording in Swinghouse studios.

That probably doesn’t tell you a whole lot about FoE’s sound (despite the fact that they are from Dublin, they are definitely not the second coming of Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly).

The first track on Coming Apart – which happens to be the title track – sounds almost Clapton-ish. The next track, ‘No Surprise’, sounds like a cross between Augustana and Ocean Street.

If you needed any more ideas about their sound, their remake of ‘Young Americans’ sounds like they could have hired Robert Randolph and the Family Band to give them a hand, with the brass section used. ‘Amazed’, the fourth track on the EP, sounds like a slowed down song that The Fray could have released.

Basically, the bottom line here is this: if you are into the mellow alternative rock sound, definitely check these guys out – you will be a big fan. If you live on the West Coast, they could be coming your way soon; as they are hitting the road in that area starting in May.

I disagree with your assessment of the band. Their songs are filled with heart and their lyrics mean something, unlike so many commercial bands out there today. Just because they lay on the mellow side does not mean they should be dismissed, just because their sound vaires does not mean they don’t have one. They are amazing, and we are lucky to have them in the fight for prevention.

In closing, Their not the fray, their not clapton ish what ever than means, they are F.O.E. and they are going to change the game.

Sadly you just don’t understand.

Best of luck to your blog.

Seeing that Eric Clapton is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has been around for 30+ years, I fail to see how I am ‘dismissing the band.’ I didn’t say they were the next incarnation of Lady Gaga or Britney Spears, all fluff and no substance.

Also, regarding The Fray comment, I meant that they although they are somewhat alt-rock (more mellow alt-rock), they are not like a Third Eye Blind, etc. – there are keys in the song but it is not the prevalent instrument (as opposed to a Ben Folds type of sound, where the song is driven by the piano).

Maybe you are the one that just doesn’t understand…if the band was garbage (which they are not), I would not have featured them. I’m out to promote good music, not average to below-average music.

PS – thanks for the good luck wishes, hopefully next time you visit you will find something you like a little more.

Calm down Kevin, this review did not bash them, what’s the problem???

4

you need to feature more bands like these guys and cut down on the metal reviews…

5

Diggin’ the tune…not sure they are gonna ‘change the game’ though

I recently discovered this band through Amazon.com’s recommendations, based on my previous purchasing history. Sometimes I take a chance on the unfamiliar & in this case I’m glad I did.

The CD arrived yesterday & I haven’t turned it off since I got it. I’m not sure what it is, but there’s something totally “familiar” about it after the first listen, like it’s an old favourite or something. I’ve listened to it in it’s entirety about a dozen (maybe more) times since I got it & I have to say that it’s probably one of my favourites now. I’m a little bummed to find that it’s a debut album as it means that this is all I have of them right now.

Favourite tracks are Suntan Superman, Watching The World, Always The Same & Comin Apart.

It’s nice to have REAL music to listen to again. the more airplay and support the likes of these guys get, the sooner we can have our airwaves back from Lady Britney of Bieber-ville
