fun. Takes Aim and Ignites
By
Every so often, an album comes along that is a breath of fresh air. While it may be different from what you usually listen to, it makes you take a step back and think, “Damn, this is really good.” The band called “fun.” had that exact effect on me when I listened to their recently released debut disc, Aim and Ignite.
After hearing the first couple minutes of the opening track, “Be Calm,” I had a smile on my face and couldn’t wait to digest the remainder of the album. It is a song that seems to automatically put you in a better mood regardless of what happens to be going on in your life at the moment. I was hopeful that the next nine songs would have a similar impact and to my delight, I was not let down.
Bandmates Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost, and Jack Antonoff take you on an amazing musical journey from beginning to end. Aside from “Be Calm,” a couple favorites of mine include “Walking The Dog” and “The Gambler.” Like most songs on the record, “Walking The Dog” is extremely catchy and provides a chorus that you will be gleefully singing along to with each and every listen. The piano-infused “The Gambler” is a beautiful, upbeat ballad that recounts the joys of being with the person you love the most in this world for the last 30 years.
By no means do I listen to depressing music (for the most part), but there are only a few bands/albums in my musical repertoire that have such a profound positive impact immediately upon selecting it to play on my iPod. The first band that comes to mind in this category is Sublime. Sublime was a band that was always able to lift my spirits if I needed it or was the perfect ingredient if I simply wanted to relax and smell the roses. Bands and records like these are few and far between. I am ecstatic to have found another in fun. and their truly refreshing album Aim and Ignite.
