Not Your Average Fireworks Display
By
No matter how many Fourth of July parties they go to, some people just can’t see enough fireworks. For me, I think that once you’ve seen one firework, you’ve seen them all…until now.
I heard Fireworks, the band, for the first time a few weeks ago when they opened for Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, and Polar Bear Club in San Francisco. I arrived about halfway through their set and immediately texted Duke to find out who this opening act was. Even though I was stoked to see the headliners of the evening, I couldn’t help but find myself captivated by this band’s onstage energy and infectious sound.
It became clear that these Fireworks were unlike any others I’ve seen before.
Shortly thereafter, I sought out their 2008 release, All I Have to Offer is My Own Confusion. I quickly realized that my initial impression of the band was justified. The same energy and passion from their live show are present on this album and as a result, I find myself constantly coming back to it on my playlist.
While the disc is pretty solid from top to bottom, there are a couple tracks in particular that stand out above the rest. “I Support Same Sex Marriage” is a track that tells of the frustrations that can arise from unsuccessful attempts at catching the eye of the girl you love. Given my affinity for gang vocals, I am particularly fond of the closing sing-along:
“When you spend all your time
With your eyes to the sky
You end up looking down your nose just to
Look me in the eye”
Keeping with the sing-along theme, “Detroit” is far and away my favorite track on All I Have To Offer Is My Confusion. Within the very first second, you are guaranteed to be turning your volume to the max, as Fireworks emphatically sing:
“WHOA-OA-OA-OA!
You don’t need maps
When you know where the sidewalk cracks!”
The rest of this inspired tune is sure to keep you rocking out and singing loud. Now, only if all fireworks could be so intriguing…
