Yesterday May Be Gone, But Tomorrow is a New Day For Burning Borders

By

Burning Borders

When someone recommends a hard rock band to me, I am always skeptical of what I might hear. Godsmack releasing their debut album was what first got me into the genre (I’m not like 50 years old so I can’t say I’ve been listening to it since Black Sabbath formed). Because of that, there isn’t much left to hear that sounds fresh or original.

I listened to Away From the Sun when Three Doors Down released it, and – although I am somewhat ashamed to admit it now – I was a huge fan of it…..until i realized that every other album they would release after it would sound EXACTLY the same.

Even with the above being said, there are still bands that are in this genre that can still hold my attention. Once in a while a band can step out from the crowd with their song composition and lyrics that aren’t overly cliche.

Burning Borders is one of those bands, as proven by their new release Yesterday’s Gone.

The lead singer’s vocal style is reminiscent of Breaking Benjamin, especially on songs like ‘Last Inhale’, which seems to combine vocal elements of BB, Three Days Grace, and Theory of a Deadman. There is even a section in ‘Cold’ where the singer channels his inner David Draiman.

‘Beautiful’ is a statement about people’s vanity and how the definition of beauty in their eyes is way off the mark. ‘Leading’ (the song which Thorny Bleeder Records initially sent me as a sample) finds someone leaving their partner after they find out that their significant other has been lying to them and leading them blindly.

While Burning Borders isn’t going to getting any press for creating a wild new genre with Yesterday’s Gone, it is a very strong offering in the hard rock genre and something definitely worth listening to. If you are a fan of Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, or any of the other mainstream rock bands that are actually worthy of the praise they get, these guys deserve your attention.

Standout Tracks: Beautiful, Sleep, Last Inhale, Give Up
